About Dr. Popham

Dr. Shelby Popham has been teaching at UCLA, in the Comparative Literature Department, the English Department and Writing Programs for over 30 years, in Writing Programs since 1988. She has a PhD in Comparative Literature (English, French and Italian). Since 1988, she has been the writing coach for K-University teachers in the California Writing Project. She helped develop the national English Language Common Core Standards and has twice received UCLA's Distinguished Teaching Award. In addition to her academic career, Dr. Popham has recently published a horror novel, The Bog.

In 2009, she began offering summer writing workshops for middle and high school students. These workshops introduce students to university-level writing expectations and provide them with the knowledge and practice necessary to meet those expectations.​

In addition to the summer workshops, Dr. Popham also offers private and group tutoring throughout the year in the greater Los Angeles area.
