Workshop Descriptions

Introduces students to the 10 essentials of writing successful academic essays. From reading, to brainstorming, to drafting, to revising, students will learn what constitutes, as well as how to achieve, powerful academic writing. The course covers the same techniques that first-year UCLA students are taught, presented in grade-appropriate lessons.

Builds on the 10 essentials from Academic Writing I, using those same strategies to analyze and write about literature. They will be introduced to the three major genres (poetry, drama, and narrative) and will learn strategies to tackle even the most challenging pieces—with lessons that are simple, yet produce sophisticated analyses. Students do not need to have taken Academic Writing I to participate in Academic Writing II.

Offers students the opportunity to shift away from academic writing to focus on personal writing. Students will explore writing poetry as well as narrative. All writings will tap into their own individual interests and styles. By the end of the workshop, students will have multiple completed pieces, as well as others that they have begun and can continue at their leisure.
